Seedy Saturday Recap
Talking to other gardeners, learning to start seeds, seeing friends, getting new seeds, something for kids to do, meeting the different groups…these were some of your responses when we asked people what they liked best about Seedy Saturday.
Our goals for Seedy Saturday are to connect people with: seeds, information, and hopefully new friends. This year, we had at least 500 seed packets donated by Whole Foods along with seeds we saved from our own garden. Add to that seeds brought by community members, and Montgomery will be growing a lot of food and flowers this year!
A book we found in the Juliette Hampton Morgan Memorial Library, Seed Swap: the gardener’s guide to saving and starting seeds, inspired us to start Seedy Saturday. It describes English and Canadian Seedy Sundays. We knew no Alabama Sunday could be Seedy, so we thought we’d give a seedy Saturday a try.
This year was our fourth year, and our biggest yet with over 150 people visiting the farm. If you were part of Seedy Saturday, please fill out this survey to help us plan a better event next year.
We are really grateful that we could have this event in person this year, and we are also grateful to everyone who came together to make the event happen. At the risk of leaving someone out… here goes:
We’re grateful to Master Gardener Jamie Walcott who taught a seed starting and transplanting class.
Thank you Whole Foods for thinking of us and giving us seeds!
Thanks to all the groups who joined us for the community area: Capitol City Master Gardeners, St. Peter Health and Wellness Ministry, Alabama Herb Society, Montgomery City-County Public Library, Grow More/Give More, and Alabama State University Teaching Garden. All these and many more groups in Montgomery work to connect people with gardens and good food!
Thank you Trinity Presbyterian Church and Max Credit Union volunteers and E.A.T. South Volunteers Alan, Tara, Kim, Carolyn, Karen, Tricia, and Sara.
Thank you to everyone who brought seeds, books, magazines and tools, and came to Seedy Saturday!
Ok, we’ve probably overlooked someone, and we’re really sorry. It’s been a week and we’ve been rushing to catch up with this spring weather. We are tired! But, we so look forward to planning a bigger, better event next year.
