Where did April go?
Wow, what a month!
We find ourselves in May wondering: where did April go? Spring is always busy on a farm. Added to the seasonal tasks of getting the garden ready for summer, we also:
Were the guest speaker at the Central Alabama Master Gardener Association’s April meeting.
Talked about compost at Grace Episcopal Church’s Creation Care Day.
Hosted students from Alabama Christian Academy’s senior class for a volunteer day.
Participated in Alabama Herb Society’s Herb Day. Thank you, everyone who purchased plants!
Donated plants to area gardens.
Welcomed preschoolers, kindergarteners, first graders, and second graders for about six different field trips (and had amazing help from volunteers to teach all of these students).
Gave tours to Master Gardeners from around the state who were in Montgomery for their annual conference. (Technically, this was May 3 but we spent a lot of time in April tidying the farm, sweeping the dust under the rugs, and hiding things in the metaphorical closets. A big thanks to Billie Crawford who mowed and trimmed us into respectability!)
Applied for a grant and tried to keep up with all the day to day farm maintenance and animal care.
Worked with students from the Therapeutic Recreation Center.
Continued harvests for our community partners.
Accomplished all of this with the help of many, many generous volunteers!
I’m sure I’m forgetting something. April was a blur, and now, we’re trying to catch up with summer planting. We’re filling up the container garden with peppers, basil, cucumbers and other delicious things. This summer, we’re trying to grow organic tomatoes in the greenhouse. In the big garden, the Master Gardener’s demonstration beds are bursting with squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, arugula and more. We’ll harvest our new potatoes next week and continue planting okra, sweet potatoes and field peas.
Stop by the farm and see what’s growing!
