Looking Forward to 2022
2022 Saturday events are here! Seedy Saturday is back along with our garden fundamentals classes focused on seed starting and organic and fall gardening. We’re also excited to add new workshops covering mushrooms, square foot gardening and container gardening. Stay tuned for information about the return of Farmily Days and other ways to learn and play at your urban teaching farm. All workshops are at E.A.T. South. Almost all are free, but we’ll need to charge for a few to cover the cost of materials (unless you know someone who might want to sponsor the series…) .
January 22 - Seed Starting 101 - 10-12 - Get ready for Seedy Saturday with this workshop dedicated to everything you need to know to grow your own healthy transplants from seeds at home. During this hands-on workshop, you’ll start your own seeds for spring. Free!
February 5 - Mushroom Log Workshop - 10-12 - Guest teacher Lydia Tritt returns to teach our mushroom log workshop. All participants make their own mushroom logs to take home. All materials provided. ($25 to cover the cost of materials)
February 26 - Seedy Saturday - 10-12 - Seedy Saturday is Montgomery’s annual seed swap. If you save seeds or just bought too many, bring them to share. If you need seeds, you’ll find everything from flowers to zucchini. Free!
March 12 - Organic Gardening 101 - 10-12 - Organic Gardening 101 is a whirlwind tour of spring gardening. We cover garden bed preparation, transplanting, varieties and more. Leave ideas and resources (and probably a few plants) to help you grow your best garden ever. Free!
March 26 - Square Foot Gardening - 10-12 - Master Gardener and Square Foot Gardening Certified Instructor Henry Lucas teaches you the ins and outs of Square Foot Gardening. Learn how to grow more vegetables in a smaller space and get your hands dirty planting a square foot garden at E.A.T. South. Free!
April 12 - Vegetable Container Gardening - 10-12 - Want to grow vegetables but don’t think you have the space? Master Garden Glenn Huovinen will share what you need to know to grow fresh, healthy vegetables in containers. Make your own air pruned pot from a 5 gal bucket. (Small charge possible to cover materials.)
May 14 - Backyard Livestock - 10-12 - Want to add livestock to your backyard farm? We’ll cover the basics for housing chickens, ducks and rabbits along with local regulations and ideas for keeping neighbors happy with your city farming endeavors. Free!
June 11 - Build Your Own Rain Barrel - 10-12- Save money, reduce runoff and water your garden with the best water around - rain water! During this hands-on workshop, you will create your own rain barrel from a recycled plastic syrup barrel. (We’re writing a grant right now to cover the materials costs. Cross your fingers for us and stay tuned.)
September 10 - Fall Garden Workshop, 9 to 11 (Note the earlier time. It’s going to be hot!) - We are blessed with a climate that allows us to eat fresh food from the garden all year long. Learn how and when to plant your fall and winter garden along with the challenges and benefits of growing year round. Free!
