Kids Corner: Dye with Red Cabbage

Here is a fun one for kids of all ages. Let’s dye with plants! Today we are going to be showing you how on Facebook LIVE at 3PM.

Did you know?

Red, purple and blue fruits and vegetables like blueberries, red cabbage and beets contain a pigment molecule called anthocyanins. These molecules are good for our health and also make the plant all sorts of pretty colors! We can use these plants to dye fabric.

Today I wanted to share an activity where you can use commonly found kitchen items to safely dye fabric. I am going to show you how to dye wool yarn.

Wanna see something cool!?

So, because cabbage contains that fancy pigment molecule, it makes it a pH indicator. That’s cool because when we put the cabbage in a alkaline solution it turns a different pretty color than when we put it in an acidic solution.

I’m following the directions of an expert natural dye artist today. You can find out exactly what to do by reading the article in the link below and by watching me on Facebook LIVE at 3PM today.
