Gardening at Night Starts March 4

Want to grow your own food but not sure where to start? Gardening at Night is a series of evening gardening classes taking you from planning to harvesting in a sustainable, organic garden. Classes are Tuesday evenings from 5:30 to 7:00 pm at the Highland Gardens Community Center (2805 Willena Avenue).

March 4 - Planning & Your Soil - We’re beginning at the beginning with a class focused on what a vegetable garden needs to grow, the best locations for your garden, possible hazards in the soil, raised beds, and more. We’ll also talk about soil tests, how to take one, and how to read them. Bring your questions! Bring pictures of your yard or garden!

March 11 - Planting Your Garden - What to plant? When to plant? Should you buy plants or seeds? How do you plant? What about container gardens? So many questions! This class is all about getting plants into the ground, planting the right plant for the right season, and things to think about to keep those plants healthy & growing.

March 25 - Ecology, Weeds, Pests & Disease - Now that things are growing, how do you manage weeds, pests, and disease in an organic garden? This class will cover tools & strategies to manage weeds, garden allies that will help you control pests, how to identify pests and disease, and more.

April 1 - Irrigation, how & when to harvest, food safety in the garden & falling into fall - No foolin’ food safety is important-even in the garden! This class will cover how to harvest food to keep it safe & fresher longer, different ways to water the garden (and we’ll have a chance to put different drip irrigation parts together), and a preview of getting ready for fall & year round gardening.

Classes are free. You are invited to attend them all or drop in for those that interest you most. Children are welcome with their grown-ups, and everyone who attends leaves with information and resources to grow healthy, organic gardens.
