Kids Corner: Ploga

Good afternoon! Farmer Amanda here.

I hope you are enjoying this gorgeous day like I am. The sun was shining down when I read a children’s story in the garden this morning. The breeze was blowing as I watered many of our raised garden beds at EAT South. We are growing so many different kinds of plants this Spring. It’s really cool! We have lettuce, beets, and carrots, radishes, okra, field peas, spinach, basil, fennel, and many other herbs like mint and rosemary. We are growing summer fruits like tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and ground cherries. And we are growing so much more! Farmer Caylor loves plants and experimenting with different plants to see what grows best in our environment.

All of the plants in our gardens look really different. They are fun to observe. Some of the plants are very short and cover the ground. Others grow way up tall over your head, like our giant amaranth. Still others are medium size and just perfect for picking, like eggplant! I want to take you on a journey through the world of plants that I love so much, so let’s get going!

Did you know!?

There is an ancient practice called yoga that started in India. Today, we have a lot of yoga practitioners here in the USA and across the globe as well! Today we are going to learn a few unique yoga poses that are inspired by plants… we’ll call it Ploga!

So let’s get started!

First, find a quiet spot in your house or out in your yard where you have space to move around. Make sure you have a little bit of time before you get started. Maybe even set a timer for your yoga for 20 minutes. Next, consider removing your shoes and socks so you can connect with the Earth and balance a little better. Stand tall with your feet under your shoulders. This is called mountain pose. Now, take a few nice deep breaths in and… out. Ah, that’s better. Now you are ready for some Ploga poses!

Pictured here are a few poses to get you started. You can also find more by searching “garden yoga” online. I am doing a Facebook LIVE Ploga session today at 3 PM: LINKED HERE. https://www.facebook.com/EATsouth/

I want to invite you to a Zoom session. If that interests you, e-mail me at goodfoodday@eatsouth.org. During a Zoom session I can show you more Ploga poses, we can get to know one another and I can answer questions about the farm!

Here is one more great way to get involved in yoga: Cosmic Kids Yoga on YouTube. These yoga sessions take you on fun imaginary journeys as you do different yoga poses.

Until next time, have fun and stay weird!

All the best,

Farmer Amanda
