E.A.T. South’s Community Projects are monthly hands-on garden education projects open to all ages. They combine seasonal lessons with a chance to practice what you just learned. If you’re new to gardening, don’t have space to garden, or want to meet other garden-y folks, Community Projects are a great way to learn and enjoy a morning outside. If you attend several, you’ll also see how a garden changes throughout the year.

Each month’s Community Project focuses on a seasonal theme. In February, we’re planting our early spring garden, and we’ll focus on preparing the garden for spring, soil and germination temperatures, and what you can plant when. We can also look at early garden pests (aphids!), cover crops, and compost. Then, if the garden isn’t too wet, we’ll plant the seeds that will become our radishes, shell peas, and snap peas!

In March, we’ll likely talk about transplanting. In April, we might focus on chickens and other backyard livestock. Stay tuned. Monthly topics may change since we develop the lesson content around what the garden needs at that time. If you have questions or specific things you like us to cover, let us know

All Community Projects end with a harvest. We grow food year round, and as a thank you for helping us in the garden, you get to take home some of our fresh vegetables. We think eating from the garden is another fun way to learn about growing vegetables all year long.

Our next Community Project is February 8, 8-10 am. It might be chilly so wear layers and clothes that can get dirty. See you then!
